    • The Purpose of the Policy:
      • The use of generative AI in education presents both opportunities and challenges. While it can enhance learning experiences and foster creativity, it also raises concerns about academic integrity, bias, and privacy. This policy aims to provide guidance on the ethical and responsible use of generative AI at Leafville Ohio High School, trying to ensure that its benefits are maximized while limiting potential risks.
    • Scope
      • This policy applies to all students, teachers, and administrative staff at Leafville Ohio High School. It includes the use of generative AI technologies in classroom activities, homework assignments, and research projects.
  2. Definitions
    • Generative AI
      • Generative AI refers to artificial intelligence systems capable of producing new content, such as text, images, or music, based on patterns and data inputs. This includes but is not limited to language models and other machine learning algorithms used for creative output.
    • Key Terms
      • Academic Integrity
        • Having honest and ethical behavior in the classroom and while working on schoolwork outside of the classroom.
      • Bias
        • Unfair advantages or disadvantages for certain groups or individuals
  3. Ethical Principles
    • Integrity and Honesty
      • Students and educators must uphold academic integrity when using generative AI, and keeping a difference between their original work and generative AI.
    • Equity and Accessibility
      • The school will do its best to provide equal access to all AI tools and will minimize any biases to ensure fairness.
    • Privacy and Security
      • Students’ and educators’ data will be safeguarded in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and measures will be implemented to protect against unauthorized access or misuse of personal information.
  4. Guidelines for Use
    • Educational Use Cases:
      • Generative AI may be used to support learning objectives, such as generating writing prompts
    • Prohibited Uses:
      • Generative AI may not be used to complete assignments on behalf of students or to engage in academic dishonesty, plagiarism, or any form of cheating.
    • Collaboration and Sharing:
      • Students and teachers are encouraged to collaborate and share AI-generated work within the school community, as long as they do it in the right way.
  5. Responsibilities
    • Students
      • Students are responsible for using generative AI tools ethically, and adhering to all rules/guidelines put in place regarding generative AI.
    • Teachers and Staff
      • To monitor and guide students in the use of generative AI
    • Administration
      • School administrators will provide resources, training, and technical support for the ethical and effective use of AI in education
  6. Monitoring and Compliance
    • Monitoring Use
      • The school will monitor the use of generative AI tools to ensure compliance with the policy
    • Handling Violations
      • Procedures for addressing policy violations will be fair, consistent, and aimed at educating students in the correct ways to use generative AI. Punishments will be handed out for incorrect use.
  7. Support and Resources
    • Training and Education
      • Students and staff will receive training on the ethical use of generative AI and the interpretation of AI-generated content
    • Technical Support
      • Technical assistance with AI tools will be available to students and teachers
  8. Review and Update
    • Policy Review Schedule
      • Every 2 years the policy will be reviewed to make sure that it keeps up to current trends
    • Feedback Mechanism
      • Students, teachers, and parents will have opportunities to provide feedback on the policy through an email genaifeedback@leafvilleohio.org
